Following Max Weber (1978),Jean-Marie Pillon understands NPM as the result of sustainedmodernization and rationalisation processes in bureaucratic operations.Using the example of the French public job centres, he shows effectsof the organisational readjustment in terms of NPM on the division oflabour in the administrative organization (here, between career advice, job placement and controlling), and discusses attempts by theoperative staff to elude complete external control in order to maintain autonomous room for manoeuvre.Subjects / Keywords
