Entre 1952 et 1959, la compagnie General Electric, à l’initiative et sous la direction d’Harold Smiddy, vice-président en charge de la division consulting, a fait écrire, et diffuser au sein de la compagnie, un ouvrage en quatre tomes intitulé « Professional Management in General Electric ». Nous interrogeons leur contenu et leur filiation, et nous demandons quel statut on peut donner à ces ouvrages aujourd’hui. Nous montrons qu’ils constituent une « réduction en art » du management contemporain tel qu’il s’est développé au cours de la première partie du XXème siècle et analysons dans ces quatre tomes ce qui peut être aujourd’hui considéré comme daté et ce qui, au contraire, constitue des invariants, pour certains peut-être un peu oubliés.
Abstract (EN)
Between 1952 and 1959, the General Electric Company, on the initiative and under the direction of Harold Smiddy, vice-president in charge of the consulting division, had a four-volume work entitled "Professional Management in General Electric" written and distributed within the company. We question their content and their filiation, and we ask what status we can give to these books today. We show that they constitute a "reduction to art" of contemporary management as it developed during the first part of the twentieth century and analyze in these four volumes what can be considered today as dated and what, on the contrary, constitutes invariants and why some of which have been somewhat forgotten.
